Spring Break HELL! Fort Myers

March 13th - 21st

We were so excited to work our way over to the Gulf Coast as we were able to nab a last minute cancellation...and we read rave reviews about this “vintage” RV resort located right on the beach in Fort Myers. I mean...how great will this be! We soon realized that “vintage” was not at all what you would think of as vintage, but rather a tired, over-crowed, RV parking lot with a few trees, but YES, right on the beach! Vintage equated to run down and over-priced. Most permanent structures should have been condemned. This journey to the gulf coast was after we realized that spring break was NOT at all cancelled and with that, 3 miles down this barrier strip took 55 minutes of drive time. Steve was not at all thrilled. We were now trapped in a “vintage” RV “resort” with 1/4 of all of America ...because trust us....Florida is OPEN for business and masks are NOT required. Actually, many people didn’t know we were in a pandemic, shocking really.

Upon pulling in with our 43’ 5th wheel, a young kid from this “vintage resort” was PARKING RVs in their spots by using a tractor because it was that tight between rigs...Steve sternly told him, “if I can’t pull this into our spot, we will not be staying”. Steve was able to pull it in within minutes, however, the reality of “what did we get ourselves into”, soon set in. This whole trip we were able to keep our family safe and now we were in spring break hell where literally no one was wearing masks. We decided we would need to make the best of it in order to keep our sanity. There was one minor issue; we literally could not use our phone because there was no reception - too many people in one small area. Steve was in disbelief.

Regardless of this place we did not want to be at, Sandie could be on the beach with us. YAY! We had wonderful morning runs before all the hungover folks got up. We even set up out Kelty sunshade before anyone and had our own private spot on the beach. We also watched some amazing sunsets..AND Steve was able to work at my cousin’s law office in Naples. We actually survived spring break hell. We have determined that Fort Myers would not be a place we would ever need to visit again.

There was one pleasant day in our trip to Fort Myers and that was Sanibel Island! Oh how we wish we could have found a spot to set up camp there. Sanibel Island was a charming area with pristine beaches. We were so happy we braved the ”short” drive (short meaning just 20 miles - not “short” when it took an hour and fifteen minutes to get there).
